Over the Reef

Shot in Recife, October, 2013

Recife was built next to a long barrier reef. More than a natural anchorage, the barrier also gave the city its name, which literally means reef.

In 1822, the Recife Lighthouse was inaugurated over the barrier, next to an old fortress from the early 1600s. Even though a port “modernization” project sadly demolished the centuries-old fortress in 1910, its nonagonal foundation remains visible.
